Dr. Olivia Boorom (she/her) is a speech-language pathologist and assistant professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Georgia State University. She is also the Principal Investigator (PI) of the Communication and Social Connection Lab at GSU. Her research focuses on early communication skills in people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who are nonspeaking. Specifically, her line of research seeks to understand how dyadic interactions can be leveraged to support communication outcomes in nonspeaking people and to identify novel methods for measuring communication skills in this population.Â
I completed my clinical fellowship and worked as an SLP in Nashville, TN at the Vanderbilt Music Cognition Lab. I gained experience working with a highly interdisciplinary team on projects combining behavioral, neuroscience, genetics, and eye tracking approaches.
My research is informed by my clinical experience as an SLP. I specialize in diagnostics and early intervention for autistic children and their families, and I've continued to grow my clinical skills through training in new intervention approaches and by becoming a research-reliable ADOS-2 examiner.
Outside of the lab, I'm an avid runner, hiker, and backpacker and love exploring new places with my dog!
